British Embassy Washington

British Embassy Washington
The Embassy is also the consular office for the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. Like every British office in the U.S., it does not issue passports or visas: passports come from HM Passport Office online, visas from UK Visas and Immigration.

The British Embassy is at 3100 Massachusetts Avenue NW, and it does two jobs. The ambassador's side handles relations with the U.S. government. The consular team, in the same building, serves British nationals in DC and four nearby states.

How to book an appointment at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Public access to the British Embassy in Washington is by appointment only, for security reasons. You do not walk in.

Two services are booked here. For an emergency travel document you apply online first, pay £125, and the FCDO tells you whether to come in. For a notarial or documentary service, gov.uk's guidance is to try a local notary first and write through the online enquiry form only if a notary cannot do it.

The Embassy also lists a citizenship ceremony service.

Real reviews of the British Embassy in Washington, D.C.

The Embassy's Google listing averages 2.8 stars from 196 reviews. The praise is for the building and its garden, seen on open days; the complaints are about the phone menu and not reaching a person.

Could not get through to anyone on the main number, the website did not answer my visa question, and I found no obvious way to book an appointment.

Vicky P.

Lovely building, but the phone menu sent me round in circles when I asked about renewing my passport. In the end I renewed online, which is how it is done from abroad anyway.

Fergus O.

Visited during the Passport DC weekend: the cars, the rose garden and the Ambassador's dining room were the highlights.

James W.

What the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. handles

The list of what happens inside the British Embassy in Washington is short.

gov.uk lists three services at the Embassy: emergency travel documents, notarial services and citizenship ceremonies. It also issues, online, the J1 no objection statement that British exchange visitors need for a U.S. waiver, and sends it to the U.S. Department of State itself.

The Embassy still has two older office pages on gov.uk, “British Consular Services” (updated July 2025) and “Passport enquiries”, that send visa questions to the UK Border Agency and its “Worldbridge” portal.

That agency closed in 2013, gov.uk says; visas are now handled by UK Visas and Immigration, which is where the Embassy’s main page sends you. (sources on gov.uk: 1, 2)

UK visa biometrics are not taken at the embassy: VFS Global, the company that runs UK visa application centers here, lists one in Washington, D.C., open Monday to Friday.

What you can settle without going

A good part of British paperwork is done without going to any office.

  • You can renew an adult British passport online with HM Passport Office, which sends it back by courier: Passport renewal.
  • You can apply for a first passport for a child born in the U.S., and your countersignatory may hold a U.S. passport: First or child passport.
  • You can cancel a lost or stolen passport online before you replace it: Lost or stolen passport.
  • What an embassy does and what a consulate does

An embassy represents the UK government to the U.S. government: the ambassador presents UK policies in Washington and reports back to London, according to the Embassy's gov.uk page. Consulates look after British nationals in their districts and work on trade and investment.

In Washington the two roles share a building. The Embassy's consular team does for DC, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia what a consulate general does elsewhere. For any other state, the office to contact is the consulate that gov.uk assigns to it.

This is an independent guide, not the UK government. It does not process applications or book appointments. Fees and procedures change: check anything that decides a trip on gov.uk.
