Cookie policy
This page lists the cookies and similar technologies that britishconsulates.us uses, who sets them and what each one is for. It also says when they load and how to turn them off.
What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores in your browser. It can hold a setting, the record of a choice you made or an identifier. Similar technologies, such as local storage, work the same way and are covered by this policy too.
When analytics loads
Once it is switched on, Google Analytics will load as soon as a page opens, without waiting for you to accept anything. This site shows no advertising. You can turn analytics off at any time, and from then on it does not load on the pages you visit afterwards. Any of these works:
- The button on our cookie settings page, from anywhere. Your choice is kept in this browser for one year.
- Privacy Choices › Do not sell/share my personal information. Our consent tool shows it in the US states whose privacy laws require it, such as California.
- Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends this signal, we treat it as a refusal and analytics does not load.
- The consent banner that visitors from the European Union, the EEA and the United Kingdom see: choosing Do not accept has the same effect.
Who sets what
- Strictly necessary. This site and its consent tool, Sirdata, keep the record of your choice in
euconsent-v2,usprivacyand__sdgcm, for up to 360 days, and incsn_rechazo, the cookie that records a refusal made with our own button, for one year. They need no consent: without them, your choice could not be kept. - Analytics. Google Analytics 4, from Google, tells us in aggregate which pages are read and how people arrive. It can set
_gaand_ga_*. - Our consent tool’s partners. Sirdata, which provides the consent tool, also works with advertising partners such as Google, Amazon, Adobe, Xandr and Yahoo. When a page opens, they can set their own cookies to match identifiers between advertising systems. Privacy Choices › Do not sell/share my personal information stops this, and so does Global Privacy Control, in the states where our consent tool applies those choices. Our own button does not reach these partners: to stop them anywhere, block third-party cookies in your browser.
- The map. The pages of this site load the Google Maps script from maps.googleapis.com. Like any server a page loads from, Google’s servers receive your IP address and details of your browser and device, and Google’s own privacy policy applies there.
Turning cookies off in your browser
Every browser also lets you block or delete cookies. The controls are under Settings, usually within Privacy:
- Chrome. Settings › Privacy and security › Third-party cookies
- Safari. Settings › Privacy › Manage Website Data
- Firefox. Settings › Privacy & Security › Cookies and Site Data
- Edge. Settings › Cookies and site permissions
Deleting this site's cookies also deletes your refusal, because it is stored in one of them: after that, analytics loads again until you refuse once more.
Changes to this policy
The cookies a website uses change as its tools change. We update this page when that happens, and the version published here is the one in force.
