British consulates in the United States

The UK has nine offices that serve British nationals in the United States: the British Embassy in Washington, whose consular team covers DC and four nearby states, and eight consulates general, in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Boston and Miami.

gov.uk publishes no honorary consuls in the country, so these nine pages are the whole official network.

Two states are split. Connecticut goes to New York for Fairfield County and to Boston for the rest, and California is divided between Los Angeles and San Francisco without a published line. And the Boston consulate is not in Boston: its address is One Broadway, Cambridge.

No British office in the U.S. issues passports or visas. A passport is renewed online with HM Passport Office (renewing from the USA), and visitors from the U.S. need a £20 ETA. Visa biometrics are taken at VFS Global centers.

What a consulate does in person is the emergency travel document and a limited notarial service.

Google shows British “consulates” in places where gov.uk lists none. Seattle has a UK Government Office that offers no public services, Denver and Raleigh have offices for business ties, and listings in Orlando, Portland and Charlotte do not match any office on gov.uk.

Every office sees the public by appointment only. Our page on how each office takes appointments has them side by side, and fees and requirements collects the fees in pounds that apply from the U.S.

Where the British offices are

Here are all the British consulates in the United States

Each consulate general covers a list of states published on gov.uk. All of them work by appointment, and none of them renews passports or issues visas.

The British Embassy in Washington

The Embassy represents the UK to the U.S. government, and it also houses the consular team for DC, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. For people in those places it plays the role a consulate plays elsewhere; for everyone else, the office to contact is the consulate that covers their state.

Other cities

Most American cities have no British office. These have a page of their own: which office covers them, how far away it is, and what can be done without going.

The Embassy is in the District itself, so there is no separate city page.

Book an appointment

This is an independent guide, not the UK government. It does not process applications or book appointments. Fees and procedures change: check anything that decides a trip on gov.uk.
